  • The HSE has launched a podiatry service in Co. Kerry in conjunction with the Diabetes Federation of Ireland.

It says it has recently appointed two senior podiatrists to the region.

Eithne McAuliffe, Primary Care and Specialist Services Manager for the HSE in Kerry, said the the podiatry service will provide a combination of education, screening, evaluation and intervention, with the ultimate aim of preventing or reducing foot-related complications associated with chronic diseases like diabetes.

Those patients at moderate to high risk of foot complications will be seen by the new podiatrists, while lower-risk clients will continue to be managed by public health nurses, GPs and practice nurses.

In addition, the HSE says some very high risk clients may be referred to the podiatry team at Cork University Hospital and the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital in Cork.

People with diabetes can be prone to foot problems caused by damage to blood vessels or nerves. In some cases, if the problems are not looked after properly, there can be a risk of amputation.

Podiatry is recognised as essential in the management of diabetes. Podiatrists work with a team of health specialists in hospitals and the community as part of an integrated care programme for diabetes.

There are now three dedicated consultant-led diabetes clinics held monthly at Kerry General Hospital and 28 specialist diabetes nurse-led outpatient clinics health monthly in the community throughout Kerry.
