Keep taking osteoporosis treatments

People with osteoporosis are being urged to continue taking their treatments for the condition during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Osteoporosis is a condition in which the bones become weak and brittle, leading them to break very easily. This can have a major impact on the quality of life of those affected.
According to the president of the Irish Osteoporosis Society (IOS), Prof Moira O'Brien, patients should not let their treatments lapse at this time as maintaining bone health is crucial, particularly during the winter months.
"It is vital this winter that people continue to protect their bone health, as osteoporosis is a hidden disease with many patients unaware they have it until they break a bone. The consequences of a bone break can be significant and far-reaching, leaving people unable to do basic tasks such as washing, dressing or walking unaided," Prof O'Brien commented.
She noted that the pandemic is already having an impact on osteoporosis worldwide, resulting in a backlog of assessments for the condition.
"I want to remind current patients of the dangers of not continuing to take your osteoporosis treatment. We are urging patients across Ireland not to allow their treatment to lapse at all. The consequences of a bone break can be significant and far-reaching.
"The simplest way to do this is to speak to your GP about getting both your winter health check or flu vaccine, and your osteoporosis treatment, at the same time," Prof O'Brien said.
She acknowledged that some people may be afraid that they will be exposed to illness, including COVID-19, if they attend a health check-up, but she insisted that people are putting themselves at higher risk if they do not attend routine screenings and appointments.
"Our surgeries are now equipped for routine visits in a coordinated and safe manner. Whether you choose to show up in person or visit via video, it is important to check in periodically with your doctor, certainly at this time of year. Screenings are important for maintaining overall health and catching potential problems," she said.
The IOS is urging people with osteoporosis to contact their GP to arrange a winter health check, and to continue their treatment for the condition.
