US President, Donald Trump, has tested positive for COVID-19, along with his wife, Melania.

President Trump confirmed the news in a tweet, stating that he and the First Lady "will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately".

According to a statement from the President's physician, Dr Sean Conley, Mr Trump and his wife "are both well at this time and they plan to remain at home within the White House during their convalescence".

"Rest assured, I expect the President to continue carrying out his duties without disruption," Dr Conley said.

Mr Trump was tested after White House advisor, Hope Hicks, tested positive for the virus. He and the First Lady had been in close contact with Ms Hicks in recent days - she travelled with them on Air Force One to the first presidential election with Joe Biden on Tuesday.

The news comes just one month ahead of the election to determine the next president of the US. 

The US has recorded the highest number of cases and deaths from COVID-19 since the pandemic began, with over seven million confirmed cases and more than 212,000 deaths.
