A further 68 deaths from COVID-19 have been confirmed, along with 556 new cases of the virus.

Of the 68 deaths, 50 occurred in February, 15 in January and two in December. One death is still under investigation.

This brings the total number of deaths here to 3,752.

Of the 556 new cases, 163 occurred in Dublin, 45 in Limerick, 38 in Galway, 34 in Cork and 29 in Waterford. The total number of cases now stands at 204,940.

As of 2pm on Tuesday, there were 1,104 patients with confirmed COVID-19 in hospital, 182 of whom were in ICU. There had been an additional 54 hospitalisations in the past 24 hours.

As of February 6, a total of 236,996 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine had been administered - 152,652 first doses and 84,334 second doses.

The 14-day incidence rate in Ireland up to midnight on February 8 was 319 per 100,000 of the population. However, nine counties were above this, with Monaghan the worst affected at 651.6, followed by Carlow (451.4) and Waterford (445.9).

Earlier, the Tánaiste, Leo Varadkar, said that the Government was working on a revised version of its COVID-19 plan, the details of which will be announced the week after next. It has not yet been decided what will reopen under the revised plan, he noted.
