A further 675 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Republic, the lowest number in several days. However, six more deaths have also been reported.

This brings the total number of cases here to 59,434, while the total number of deaths is now 1,896.

Of the 675 confirmed cases, 199 occurred in Dublin, 104 in Cork, 67 in Meath, 50 in Limerick and 41 in Kildare.

As of 2pm on Wednesday, there were 328 people in hospital with confirmed COVID, 41 of whom were in ICU. There had been 19 additional hospitalisations in the previous 24 hours.

The 14-day incidence rate per 100,000 of the population in the 14 days up to midnight on October 26 was 299 nationally. However 11 counties were above this national average, with Cavan the worst affected, at 811.3 per 100,000, followed by Meath (597.8), Westmeath (452.9) and Sligo (425.7).

The counties with the lowest 14-day incidence rate were Tipperary (139.1), Wicklow (145.3) and Kilkenny (173.3).

The chief medical officer, Dr Tony Holohan, urged everyone to be aware of the actions they should take if they have symptoms, are awaiting a test, or are the contact of a confirmed case.

"If you have symptoms of COVID-19, you must self isolate and phone your GP for further advice. If you have been referred for a test or are awaiting a test result, you must self isolate.

"If you are a confirmed case of COVID-19 you must self isolate for 10 days. If you are identified or have identified yourself as a close contact of a confirmed case, you must restrict your movements," he explained.
