People with diabetes need to understand the impact that poor control of the condition can have on them, Diabetes Ireland has said.
The national charity, which offers advice, support and education to people with diabetes, is hosting a diabetes management workshop in Dublin next weekend, in an attempt to help people improve their control of the condition.
The workshop, ‘Head to Toe Management', aims to inform people how to cope with a diagnosis of diabetes and how to best manage the condition. It will also focus on future concerns people may have in relation to diabetes-related complications.
The workshop will be divided into three separate groups:
- Type 1 diabetes
- Type 2 diabetes
- Parents and teens with type 1 diabetes. In relation to type 1 diabetes, the workshop will explore a number of issues, including the emotional impact, managing insulin adjustment, food choices, sexual dysfunction and planning for pregnancy.
For parents and teenagers with type 1 diabetes, the workshop will look at the impact of this diagnosis on the entire family and ongoing health concerns.
The type 2 diabetes workshop will focus on a range of topics, including lifestyle changes, the impact of the condition on heart health, the importance of medication, eye health and the health of the feet.
The workshop takes place on Sunday, November 16, in the Regency Hotel, Drumcondra, Dublin 9, at 2pm. If you would like to register to attend, contact Diabetes Ireland on 1850 909 909 or (01) 842 8118. Registration costs €5 per person.
