Women urged to be breast aware

Women are being reminded of the importance of knowing the signs and symptoms of breast cancer.
According to the Irish Cancer Society (ICS), over 2,700 cases of the disease are newly diagnosed in this country every year and Irish women have a one in 10 chance of developing it during their lifetime.
It noted that seven out of 10 women discover a lump themselves and it called on all women to be breast aware and know what to look for.
"We are reminding women to be aware of changes in your breasts - know what is normal of you and check your breasts for any changes. If you do discover anything unusual, visit your GP without delay. Finally, attend for routine breast screening if you are aged between 50 and 64. It is important to remember that the earlier the cancer is discovered, the more treatment options are available and the more chances there is that the treatment will be successful," commented Naomi Fitzgibbon of the ICS.
Changes that women should be aware of include:
-A change in the size or shape of the breast, e.g. one breast becoming bigger
-Changes in the nipples, such as direction or shape
-Changes around the nipple area, such as a rash or flaky skin
-Changes in the skin of the breast, such as puckering, dimpling or redness
-Swelling in the armpit or around the collarbone, including a lump of any size
-A lump or thickening in the breast
-Constant pain in the breast or armpit.Anyone with concerns about breast cancer can call the ICS's National Cancer Helpline on 1800 200 700 or email helpline@irishcancer.ie
