Woman loses home birth case

A pregnant woman has lost her case against the HSE's refusal to facilitate a home birth for her.
Aja Teeha, wanted a home birth, assisted by a self-employed midwife. She had had a child by caesarean section six years ago.
Ms Teehan, from Co. Kilkenny, claimed that the HSE had implemented a blanket policy or refusing to facilitate home births for women who had previously had caesarean sections.
She claimed the HSE had breached her rights under the Constitution and under the European Convention on Human Rights.
The court was told she had no medical condition, or pregnancy complications that would have justified the home birth being refused.
The HSE defended it decision, stating that it had been based on medical evidence and best practice.
The Court ruled that the HSE's case was reasonable.
Ms Teehan's second child is due on October 13.
The case may now be appealed to the Supreme Court.
