  • The impact of the recession on suicide rates in Ireland is just one of a number of topics set to be discussed at an information evening on suicide and self-harm research in Cork later this month.

The event will be hosted by the National Suicide Research Foundation (NSRF) and will look at a number of topics including the latest suicide trends, the impact of the economic recession and how to manage mild to moderate depression.

Speakers on the night will include Prof Ella Arensman, director of research at the NSRF, and Dr Eve Griffin, manager of the National Registry of Deliberate Self-harm.

According to Prof Arensman, recent research from the NSRF has found that there are a number of ways in which the recession has impacted on suicide and self-harm rates in Ireland.

"For people with existing mental health difficulties, job loss and financial adversity increased the risk of self-harm and suicide. Other consequences of the recession include reduced options for treatment by mental health services and discontinuation of treatment, because people could not afford to pay for this anymore," she explained.

The evening will also include a question and answer session.

The event will take place on Thursday, November 28, at 7.30pm in the River Lee Hotel, Western Road, Cork. It is free of charge and all are welcome to attend.
