The ISPCC has again appealed to the Government to develop a national strategy on children's cyber safety.

According to the organisation, over the last number of years, its Childline service has received many calls from young people who are concerned about their safety online.

These calls included details of bullying, intimidation and exploitation, with some callers distressed about the fallout of sending a sexualised image.

"The ISPCC is increasingly concerned about the extent to which children and young people are exposed to exploitation and harm online. Children and young people in 2017 spend a significant amount of time online, but there is no national Government strategy that seeks to ensure they are protected and well equipped to navigate this world safely," the organisation said.

It noted that it has carried out significant work over the years to identify the key areas where action is needed, such as within law reform and education.

It added that cyber safety is considered by many to be ‘the child protection issue of our time', and it is essential that the Government, state agencies, non-governmental organisations, industry and parents ‘join together in a coordinated effort to ensure children are better protected'.
