A further seven people with COVID-19 have died in the Republic.

One death that had previously been classed as COVID-related has been denotified, so the number of deaths now stands at 1,670.

Meanwhile, 28 new cases of the virus have been confirmed, while seven have been denotified, bringing the total number of cases here to 25,163.

Data from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre shows that of the 25,135 cases reported to it as of midnight on June 3, 3,312 (13%) have been hospitalised and of these, 410 have been admitted to ICU.

Some 8,046 cases are associated with healthcare workers.

Earlier today, the Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, announced that an accelerated reopening of the country is to take place from Monday, June 8. For more on this, click here.

While this will be welcomed by many, the Department of Health's chief medical officer, Dr Tony Holohan, reminded people that "it is our individual behaviours and personal choices that will ultimately influence what course this disease takes over the coming weeks and months".

The department's deputy chief medical officer, Dr Ronan Glynn, added that it is hoped that a number of measures that are being introduced, such as the reopening of playgrounds and summer camps, "will ease the severity of this pandemic on children and their families".
