Self-test products 'not 100% reliable'

People are being reminded that self-test health products, such as pregnancy tests and blood sugar testing kits, are not 100% reliable.
According to the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA), the availability of self-test health products is increasing, but it is important that people using such products are aware of their limitations.
The authority has just published an information leaflet to help members of the public who may be using these products for medical purposes.
"The leaflet provides advice in relation to buying and using self-tests and in particular important things to note in terms of results. No self-test is 100% reliable and it is very important that those considering self-testing are aware of the limitations of these products and not to rely solely on the results provided. The HPRA advises anybody with any concerns about their health to consult with a healthcare professional," commented Anne Tobin of the HPRA.
The leaflet reminds people that certain factors may interfere with the results of their test, such as the use of certain medicines or dietary supplements. It also emphasises the importance of buying these products from a reliable source and making sure they display the CE mark, which means they have fulfilled basic safety requirements under EU law.
