Savita - UHG holds off on disciplinary move

University Hospital (UHG) says it has yet to make a decision about disciplinary action against staff in the wake of the Savita Halappanavar case.
Following the recent publication of the Arulkumaran review report into the case, Health Minister James Reilly referred it to the Medical Council and to the Nursing and Midwifery Board, the regulatory bodies for doctors and nurses, for consideration.
Last week, the nursing board requested Galway University Hospital to provide it with the duty rosters of staff who were working while Savita Halappanavar was in the care of the hospital.
However, hospital management and the HSE are holding off on making a decision on whether any staff should be subject to their own disciplinary processes as a result of the Halappanavar case.
A spokesman for the hospital said the outcome of the referral of the Arulkumaran report to the regulatory bodies was being awaited, as was the forthcoming report into the case by the safety body HIQA.
"In the meantime, it would not be appropriate to comment further, as it could be interpreted as an attempt to influence these ongoing deliberations. When these processes are complete, our board will consider all of the information available to it and will take all appropriate measures," the spokesman said.
The HIQA report is not expected to be completed until the autumn.
