Samaritans Ireland has launched a new number for people who are struggling to cope. The number - 116 123 - is free of charge.

Samaritans Ireland is a volunteer-led organisation, which provides confidential, non-judgmental emotional support, 24 hours a day, for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which could lead to suicide.

According to the organisation, this new number will make it possible for people to access service at all times free of charge.

"We hope that knowing the call is free of charge will encourage more people who need us to contact Samaritans, in particular some of the most vulnerable groups in society," commented Samaritans executive director, Catherine Brogan.

In 2007, the European Commission decided to reserve numbers beginning with 116 across all EU members states for services that offer social value. The number 116 123 was given to all 24-hour emotional support helplines.

"ComReg awarded Samaritans the 116 123 number as it is the only organisation in Ireland already meeting and exceeding all of the minimum standards for these services," the organisation said.

This new free service has been made possible by a partnership between the Samaritans and the telecommunications industry. The six largest telecoms providers - Eircom, BT Ireland, Vodafone Ireland, O2, Three and UPC - have all committed to a two-year funding programme for the 116 123 number.

Commenting on the new number, Kathleen Lynch, Junior Minister with responsibility for mental health, emphasised the importance of the Samaritans in suicide prevention because it is available ‘around the clock'.

"In this day and age, we all know someone who is finding it difficult to cope and we know that it's important that people speak about the issues that are getting them down. The fact that the Samaritans answer over 380,000 calls per year is indicative of the importance of this service," she said.
