People affected by or concerned about diabetic retinopathy - a serious eye disease related to diabetes - are invited to attend a public information evening on the condition this week.

Diabetic retinopathy is a serious eye disease, which is usually associated with long-term diabetes. High blood sugar can cause the blood vessels in the eye to leak or become blocked. If left untreated, it can lead to blindness and it is currently the most common cause of blindness in working age Irish adults.

The event, ‘VisualEYES the Risks: Managing Your Diabetes and Diabetic Retinopathy', will take place in Dublin on Wednesday and is hosted by Diabetes Ireland.

Speakers on the night will include consultant endocrinologist, Prof Seamus Sreenan, consultant ophthalmologist, Mr Mark Cahill and dietician, Sinead Hanley.

Topics covered will include the importance of eye screening, preventing complications and the importance of a healthy diet.

The event will take place in the Gresham Hotel on Dublin's O'Connell Street on Wednesday, November 20. Refreshments will be served at 6.30pm and the presentations will begin at 7pm.
