Police in the UK are investigating the case of a woman who travelled from Ireland to London for an abortion but died in a taxi hours after the procedure .
The 32-year-old woman, who was a foreign national living in Ireland, had an abortion at a Marie Stopes clinic in west London.
However, she died in a taxi hours after the procedure, the Irish Times has reported.
The woman, who had a gynaecological condition which increased the risk of miscarriage, could not obtain an abortion having sought one at a maternity hospital in Ireland. At the time, her condition was not considered to be life-threatening.
The London Metropolitan Police confirmed it was investigating the circumstances surrounding the case and preparing a file for the Crown Prosecution Services. The woman died in January 2012
The woman's husband, who wishes to remain anonymous, said he was still waiting for answers but was frustrated at the lack of progress.
The woman had suffered from extensive fibroids and had had a baby in 2010, although the pregnancy had been difficult.
The husband said the couple was told that treatment of the condition could leave her infertile and the couple were concerned about what would happen if the woman became pregnant again.
He said he was frustrated at the lack of assistance from some Irish authorities in seeking an abortion for his wife.
The Irish Independent has reporte dthat a post-mortem conducted on the woman found that she died from a heart attack, caused by extensive internal blood loss.
The maternal morality rate in the UK, at 11 per 100,000 maternities, is higher than in Ireland, where it is eight per 100,000 maternities, according to the Maternal Death Enquiry (MDE Ireland).
Around 4,000 women travel from Ireland to the UK each year for an abortion.
