  • A mental health awareness campaign is aiming to set a Guinness World Record by holding the world's largest mindfulness lesson next week.

Walk In My Shoes (WIMS) is a mental health awareness and education campaign run by St Patrick's Mental Health Services. As part of this campaign, WIMS Radio will broadcast live from St Patrick's Hospital in Dublin from October 10-14 to mark World Mental Health Awareness Week.

This is Ireland's only all-digital pop-up radio station and it will be hosted by a range of well-known presenters including Rick O'Shea, Marty Whelan, Laura Woods, Shay Byrne and Dustin the Turkey.

This year, WIMS Radio is hoping to set a Guinness World Record for the world's largest mindfulness lesson by calling on all secondary school pupils and fifth and sixth class primary school pupils to take part on Monday, October 10.

A 30-minute mindfulness lesson will be taught by a mindfulness practitioner in St Patrick's University Hospital and this will be broadcast as a Google Hangout connecting participating schools nationwide.

"Walk in My Shoes Radio is an extremely important platform for St Patrick's Mental Health Services, allowing us to connect with people all over the country to highlight the importance of seeking support and professional advice as early as possible if you are struggling with a mental health difficulty," commented Paul Gilligan, CEO of St Patrick's Mental Health Services.

He described the pop-up radio station ‘as a small step in encouraging a dialogue about mental health that is free from stigma'.

"We believe that encouraging people to support the station, and indeed the Guinness World Record attempt, will certainly help in opening the conversation about the importance of looking after your mental health," he said.

Also speaking about the station, St Patrick's head of communications, Sarah Surgenor, said that it aims to encourage listeners to prioritise their mental health.

"We feel very lucky that schools all over the country will join us in spreading this message as we attempt to set the record for the world's largest mindfulness lesson together," she commented.

WIMS Radio will broadcast for 70 hours next week. For more information, click here
