  • One in two people don't believe the new graphic warnings on cigarette packs will encourage people to give up smoking.

    Since February 1, tobacco products placed on the market must carry graphic warnings on their packaging, including explicit photographs, about the negative health effects of smoking.

    We asked readers whether they felt this measure would enrourage more people to give up smoking.

    Fifty one per cent said no, 28% said yes while 21% were unsure.

    The Irish Heart Foundation, which welcomed the graphic warnings, said the Government should now go further and introduce plain packaging on tobacco products.

    Health Minister James Reilly has said he plans to introduce plain packgaging in the future.
