  • Around one in six people have admitted they have never had an eye test, according to our latest readers' poll.

This is despite the fact that regular eye tests can not only check for vision impairment, but can also detect signs of serious diseases such as diabetes.

We asked our readers when they last had an eye test. Only one per cent said they had had an eye test in the past year.

Forty four per cent said they had had an eye test within the previous five years while just over one in three said it had been more than five years since they had an eye test.

Sixteen per cent, or one in six, said they had never had an eye test.

In a survey last year carried out by Sightsavers Ireland, 94% of Irish people said - out of all their senses - they would fear losing their sight most, while 75% said that losing their independence would be their biggest worry if they were blind.
