Obstetricicans hold fire on report

Obstetric specialists have said they are still considering the Expert Group report on abortion and are not commenting on it yet.
In a statement, the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists said it was currently reviewing the report and was consulting with members on its findings and recommendations.
The Institute said it was also awaiting the Government's response to the report.
"It is important, from the perspectives of mothers and the medical profession, to clarify what intervention in pregnancy, including termination of pregnancy, is permitted if a mother's life is in danger. This is an important issue requiring the utmost care and sensitivity."
Maternal health services in Ireland are among the best in the world and pregnant women and their families should be reassured that they are receiving the very best of care during pregnancy, the Institute added.
The Government has said it will make a decision on how to implement the recommendations of the Expert Group before the end of the year.
