Obesity costs Europe billions

Obesity will have a ‘devastating' impact on healthcare costs and productivity throughout Europe unless it is urgently tackled, the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) has warned.
It made its comments in the wake of several international reports, which show that the number of overweight and obese people continues to rise and is predicted to affect at least 50% of all European citizens by 2030. In some countries, it is predicted that up to 90% of people will be overweight or obese.
This major public health issue now costs European countries over €70 billion in healthcare costs and lost productivity.
According to EASO president, Prof Hermann Toplak, obesity is a complex and chronic condition with many causes, some of which are beyond an individual's control. However, he pointed out that a healthy lifestyle is essential.
"The causes can range from genetic and endocrine conditions to environmental factors, such as stress, diet and increasingly sedentary working patterns. A healthier lifestyle, including a healthy diet and regular physical activity can help maintain a normal weight.
"However, obesity is a chronic disease and should be recognised and treated as such. Accepting and supporting people with obesity will help them seek the help and treatment they need," he commented.
The EASO made its comments to coincide with European Obesity Day (May 21).
