  • The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) has requested Galway University Hospital to provide it with the duty rosters of staff who were working while Savita Halappanavar was being cared for.

The board has made the request following the publication of the HSE's report into the death of the 31-year-old last October 28. The report identified a number of deficits in Savita's care.

Ms Halappanavar had been 17 weeks pregnant when she attended the hospital complaining of back pain. She was informed by the hospital that she was suffering a miscarriage, which should be over within a few hours.

In the early part of her hospital stay, she and her husband, Praveen Halappanavar (34), asked if she could have a termination as it was felt the baby would not survive and as Ms Halappanavar was in serious pain. These requests were refused as a foetal heartbeat was still present.

Ms Halappanavar eventually did miscarry, but died of severe sepsis on October 28.

The HSE's report into the death was finally published earlier this month. It identified a number of factors that led to the death of Ms Halappanavar including inadequate assessment and monitoring and non-adherence to clinical guidelines relating to the prompt and effective management of sepsis at the hospital.

Last week, the Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly, expressed concern about the report and referred it to the NMBI and the Medical Council.. The rosters of nursing and midwifery staff are now being sought by the Nursing Board because the HSE report is anonymous.

The NMBI said that following a review of these rosters, along with the HSE's report and the Cononer's documents, a report will be prepared for its board.

"As part of our review procedures, we have requested duty rosters and we will use them to cross-reference the reports," explained NMBI chief executive, Dr Maura Pidgeon.

The NMBI added that it would make a further statement ‘when this review has been considered by the board'.
