New online service to apply for Medical Cards
January 15, 2018
-
All people aged 16 and older can now apply for a Medical Card online.
The HSE has launched www.medicalcard.ie, a quick and easy way to apply for Medical Cards. Applicants will discover straight away if they are eligible, and if they are, completed applications will be processed in 15 days.
This online service also allows applicants to scan and upload documents and other information, and no longer requires people to visit their GP to have paper forms stamped.
Almost 440,000 Medical Card applications were received by the National Medical Card Unit last year, so it is hoped that this new streamlined service will result in quicker turnaround times, greater convenience and better security.
"This is a very welcome new development by the HSE and is part of the ongoing streamlining and modernisation of the operation of the medical card scheme. This puts the applicant at the centre of the process and I am sure will, in time, become the preferred method of application for many applicants, both first time and those seeking a renewal," commented the Minister for Health, Simon Harris.
According to the HSE, anyone aged 16 or older can apply for, or renew, their Medical Card using their computer, tablet or mobile phone.
It said that the new system offers a number of benefits:
-The online system guides the applicant through each step of the application process
-Applicants can submit all supporting documentation digitally, including photographs of relevant material
-Their GP will be able to accept them onto their panel via the online system
-If the applicant needs to be contacted about their application, the HSE can email instead of writing to them
-When applicants have submitted their financial details as part of the online application, they will be told straight away if they qualify for a Medical Card
-Completed applications will be processed in 15 working days.To apply online, click here
