Motorcyclists urged to drive safely

Users of motorcycles, scooters and mopeds are being urged to drive safely and ensure they are wearing the right equipment when making a trip.
The warning comes from the Road Safety Authority (RSA). It pointed out that so far this year, motorcyclists have accounted for one in 10 deaths on Irish roads.
The authority is appealing to these road users to be conscious of their vulnerability when driving. Research indicates that motorcyclists are three times more likely to be killed on roads in Ireland compared with any other country in the EU.
The RSA reminded people of the importance of using the right personal protective equipment (PPE) when travelling, including the correct helmet, clothing, footwear and reflective material.
"Motorcyclists, moped and scooter users are among our most vulnerable of road users, simply because they have very little protection in the event of a crash. Yet, every day, we see people on bikes wearing jeans and t-shirts with little regard for their own safety.
"It's tempting when the weather is warm to leave the proper gear at home, but by not wearing it, you risk horrific injuries if you crash," explained RSA chief executive, Noel Brett.
He said that coming off a motorcycle at 50kph ‘is similar to throwing yourself off the second storey of a building onto a cheese-grater'.
Mr Brett also urged other road users to be aware of motorcyclists, pointing out that half of all crashes involving motorcycles ‘are caused by other drivers'.
"We're urging all drivers to check their mirrors carefully and watch out for bikers, particularly at junctions and when making right turns. During the summer, there are more bikers, scooter and moped users on the roads so please be extra cautious," he said.
