More work accidents on Thursdays in November
November 6, 2014

Workers beware this month. Thursdays in November have been the most common day for workplace accidents over the last three years, according to the Injuries Board.
The Injuries Board is the independent statutory body which makes personal injury compensation awards arising from motor, workplace and public liability accidents.
It has just released an analysis of 2013 workplace claims and according to this, Thursdays in November are the most likely day that a workplace accident resulting in an employer liability award will occur.
Last year, the least number of accidents occurred on a Sunday and April was the safest month. Slips, trips and falls were the most common type of accident, accounting for 30% of all workplace accident awards.
Overall, €24 million was paid out last year in respect of 826 claims for work accidents, compared to €22 million for 807 awards in 2012.
The average award for a workplace accident last year was €28,886, although men were awarded slightly higher at €29,523 compared to average awards of €27,441 to women.
Men were much more likely than women to have a workplace accident - they accounted for almost 70% of all awards.
The highest number of awards were made in Dublin, Cork and Limerick, while the lowest were made in Leitrim, Roscommon, Sligo and Longford.
"From a peak rate of unemployment in 2012, increasing numbers of workers are rejoining the workforce. Perhaps reflective of this, our data shows a year on year increase in the number of awards made as a result of accidents in the workplace.
"As the economy starts to grow again, and as businesses around the country begin to expand, it is important that a renewed focus on health and safety is cultivated," commented Injuries Board CEO, Patricia Byron.
