IMO members to vote on finance probe

Doctors at the IMO's AGM have agreed that members should be balloted on whether to go ahead with a retrospective review of the IMO's finances and governance over a number of years.
The review would look into the circumstances surrounding the granting of a €10 million financial package to former CEO George McNeice, who retired from the organisation in late 2012.
The probe, if it goes ahead, will also look at other issues such as the payment of allowances to former presidents of the organisation, thee awarding of contracts and the running of subsidiary companies by the IMO.
The IMO originally agreed early last year to hold to go ahead with the review, but then long-fingered it due to concerns over costs and potential legal difficulties.
The probe would examine the running of the IMO during the period when Health Minister James Reilly was a senior figure in the organisation.
The AGM in Co. Kildare also agreed to revamp the constitution and rules of the union, with a view to improving transparency and accountability in how it runs its affairs.
