  • The HSE is reminding people attending music festivals to stay safe when it comes to drugs.

While the HSE does not condone drug use and urges people not to use them, it acknowledges that festivals are "risk-taking settings where people may try drugs for the first time or try new types of drugs".

"The HSE is aware that across Europe in the last couple of years there has been a significant increase in the strength of MDMA/ecstasy, which means increased risks for users. This is likely to be reflected in Ireland also.

"If you do decide to take drugs, you should be aware of this issue and you can access our harm-reduction advice around festivals at www.drugs.ie/festivals," commented Dr Eamon Keenan, the HSE's national clinical lead in addiction services.

He advised anyone that starts to feel unwell after taking something, to immediately go to the medical tent on site.

"Be honest with the medical staff about what you have taken. They are not there to judge, only to help," Dr Keenan added.

According to the HSE, the main harm-reduction advice from experts is:

-Start low and go slow - start with a small dose and see how you get on. Wait at least two hours before taking more
-Leave the mixing to the DJ - mixing drugs, including alcohol and prescription medicine, increases the risk of becoming unwell or overdosing
-Keep cool and stay hydrated - sip water but do not drink more than a pint in one hour. Take breaks from dancing and give yourself time to cool down
-Don't be afraid to get help - if you or a friend feels unwell or suicidal after taking drugs, seek help immediately. Be honest with emergency services about what was taken.
