HIQA's Savita report out today
October 9, 2013
-
The long-awaited report of the HIQA inquiry into the death of Savita Halappanavar will be published this afternoon.
This will be the third inquiry report on the Halappanavar tragedy, following on from the coroner inquest and the HSE's own inquiry.
The HIQA probe's terms of reference included: 'to investigate the safety, quality and standards of services provided by the HSE to patients, including pregnant women, at risk of clinical deterioration, including those provided in University Hospital Galway (UHG) and as reflected in, among other things, the care and treatment provided to Savita Halappanavar.'
Savita was 17 weeks pregnant when she died as a result of sepsis on October 28, 2012 at University Hospital Galway following a miscarriage.
In addition to the inquiries into the Savita case, it may also be the subject of future regulatory and legal proceedings.
Following the publication in June of the HSE's inquiry report into Savita's death, Health Minister James Reilly referred it to medical and nursing regulatory bodies for their consideration and advice on any action appropriate, as he said it raised several important tissues in relation to professional practice.
In addition, Savita's family is taking legal action over her treatment.
