  • The IMO has called on the Government to suspend its plans to extend free GP cover until doctors are properly resourced to provide the expanded service involved.

IMO GP Chairman Dr Ray Walley said an increase in resources for general practice was needed so that GPs can cope with the existing demands on services.

In addition, he said, a strategy was required to ensure that the delivery of free GP care can be resourced.

Dr Walley said recent research highlighted the need for intensive, sophisticated planning in advance of any decision to extend GP cards to all citizens.

"The research confirms what we have long argued, which is that patients visit their GPs more often when they have medical cards or GP visit cards. The research confirms that the GP services will be unable to cope with the demand for GP services if the Government pushes ahead with its current proposals."

The Government has said it plans to introduce free GP care for under sixes by around the middle of this year.
