  • The Government has not kept its promise to compensate former patients of Drogheda obstetrician Michael Neary, a patient group has said.

Patient Focus said it had made repeated representations to Taoiseach Enda Kenny on the issue but had received no clarification.

Both Government parties, before the 2011 election promised  to compensate 35 women who suffered medical injury as a result of Dr Neary's treatment.  The Drogheda consultant was struck off the medical register in 2003 for carrying out an excessive number of caesarean hysterectomies.

The 35 women currently seeking redress were excluded from the original compensation scheme for victims of Dr Neary.

The Department of Health said it was reviewing the most appropriate way to compensate the victims of Dr Neary and Health Minister was expected to bring a proposal to the Government before the summer recess.
