Get the basics right with type 2 diabetes

People with type 2 diabetes are being encouraged to get the basics right when it comes to their condition, in order to reduce their risk of complications.
The national charity, Diabetes Ireland, has launched the ‘First Things First' campaign to highlight just how dangerous complications can become if they are not properly managed.
Complications of type 2 diabetes can include heart disease, stroke, lower limb amputation, kidney damage, nerve damage and blindness.
TV presenter and fashion designer, Brendan Courtney, whose late father had type 2 diabetes, is encouraging those affected, and their families, to learn how to properly manage the condition.
"My father had type 2 Diabetes and did not take the time to properly manage his condition. His diagnosis came as a shock to us all. As a family, we weren't fully prepared and didn't really take the time to understand what type 2 diabetes is and the possible complications it could have if not properly managed," he explained.
This campaign aims to encourage and support people to get the basics right. It also highlights the importance of lowering your HbA1C - this is a measurement of a person's average blood sugar level over the past two to three months. It therefore gives a good idea of how well a person's diabetes has been controlled during that time period.
"This campaign is about getting the basics right and ensuring you understand what HbA1c is and the importance of lowering it. Also don't forget you are not alone, make sure you get the support of your family and friends to help you," Mr Courtney said.
The campaign, which is supported by healthcare company, MSD, has been launched to coincide with World Diabetes Day (November 14). For more information on all aspects of diabetes, click here
