Fridays can be fatal on the roads
June 28, 2013

Almost one-quarter of all deaths that have occurred on Irish roads so far this year have been on a Friday, the Gardai have warned.
According to Assistant Garda Commissioner, Gerard Phillips, Friday continues to be the most dangerous day on Irish roads. As of June 26, 2013, 91 people have died and 21 of these deaths have occurred on a Friday.
Assistant Commissioner Phillips referred to the day as ‘Fatal Friday' and appealed to road users to try to make today a safer Friday for everyone. He said care is especially needed between the hours of 2pm and 6pm. Seven people have already died during these hours on a Friday in 2013.
He also reminded people of the importance of using seatbelts.
"Provisional figures indicate that eight of the 91 people killed (driver/passenger) in road traffic collisions this year, were not wearing a seatbelt. This is disappointing as all the research, evidence and safety campaigns clearly indicate that seatbelts save lives. The use of a seat belt is the most basic form of road safety," he commented.
He called on all road users to ‘make everyone's safety your focus this Friday'.
