Four more people with COVID-19 have died in the Republic, bringing the total number of deaths here to 1,714.

Sixteen new cases of the virus have also been confirmed, while three cases have been denotified, bringing the total number of cases here to 25,355.

Data from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre shows that of the more than 25,000 cases reported to it as of midnight on June 16, 3,282 cases have been hospitalised and of these, 417 have been admitted to ICU.

Some 8,147 cases are associated with healthcare workers, which is 32% of all cases.

"The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) met today and noted that approximately half of those diagnosed with COVID-19 in the community take more than two days from the onset of symptoms to make contact with their GP.

"The most important actions anyone can take from the moment they experience symptoms associated with COVID-19 is to self-isolate immediately, restrict the movement of household contacts and make phone contact with their GP," commented the Department of Health's chief medical officer and NPHET chairperson, Dr Tony Holohan.

According to Dr Siobhán Ni Bhriain, a consultant psychiatrist and HSE Integrated Care Lead, COVID-19 symptoms are common symptoms and as a result, "some people may not be inclined to immediately seek medical attention for a cough, shortness of breath, change in sense of smell, or fever to their GP".

"In the context of this pandemic, we are asking you to do so, to help us limit the spread of COVID-19," she said.

Meanwhile, according to Prof Philip Nolan, chairperson of NPHET's Epidemiological Modelling Group, the number of people in hospital this week, with the virus is continuing to decline.

"Broadly speaking, the number of new cases that are emerging and the pattern of those cases is this week almost identical to what it was last week," he noted.
