Most people are not convinced that the planned ban on menthol and other flavoured cigarettes will help reduce smoking rates, according to our latest poll.
Health Minister James Reilly is planning to introduce a ban on cigarettes which include favours such as fruit or menthol, in addition to introducing plain packaging on cigarette packets.
We asked readers whether they felt a ban on menthol and other flavoured cigarettes would help cut smoking rates.
Only 21% felt it would help cut rates, while 70% said it wouldn't and 9% said they weren't sure.
New research has shown that plain cigarette packaging discourages people from smoking, new research from Australia has shown.
Australia introduced plain cigarette packaging with graphic health warnings just over six months ago - it was the first country in the world to do so.Ireland will be the second country in the world to introduce plain cigartette packaging, having introduced graphic health photos on cigarettte packs earlier this year.
