  • Concern has been expressed about the possible closure of some maternity units in the west of the country, after it was confirmed that a review of maternity services in the region is taking place.

Health Minister James Reilly has confirmed in the Dáil that a review of maternity services in the west/north west region is underway.

Responding to questions from Mayo TD Dara Calleary, the Health Minister also said that maternity units right across the country weree being reviewed.

Deputy Calleary said the announcement confirmed that  potential sweeping cuts to maternity services are on the cards.

"The Minister's comments will do nothing to allay the concerns of families right across the west/north west region, who now fear that three maternity units are to be axed," said Deputy Calleary.

The Minister said while there was a specific review of services in the west/north west hospitals following the death of Savita Halappanavar, there was also  to be a review of all maternity units in the country.

It is speculated that the maternity units in Mayo, Ballinasloe and Sligo could now be under threat of downgrading or closure.

"I am repeating my call for assurances from the Taoiseach that the maternity unit at Mayo General Hospital will not be axed. The terms of reference for this proposed review must include regard for the generally excellent service provided by the maternity unity at Mayo General Hospital and geographic considerations across the region," Deputy Calleary said.

He said no guarantee was given by the Health Minister about the future of maternity units in the west in response to his questions in the Dáil.
