  • With the Junior and Leaving Cert examinations just days away, students are being urged to be mindful of their stress levels.

A recent survey carried out on behalf of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP) found that exams are the number one cause of stress for people under the age of 25.

"The pressure surrounding exams can be extremely anxiety-inducing for young people. It can be a contributing factor in mental health issues among students," commented counsellor and IACP chairperson, Ray Henry.

He advises young people to try to stay positive and also calls on parents to be supportive of their children by helping them to develop a skill set to cope with stress.

"Take time to listen to your children and allow them a safe space to express their uncertainty and fears," Mr Henry said.

The IACP offers the following tips to students:

-Those feeling anxious about exams should seek help from parents, friends, guidance counsellors, teachers, doctors or IACP accredited counsellors/psychotherapists
-Try to keep things in perspective and remember that your results are not the true measure of your value as a human being
-Set realistic goals that are within your means
-Maintain a healthy diet as this can help boost memory and concentration, as well as benefit your mood and overall mental health
-Remember that exercise is a stress reliever. Try to do 30 minutes of exercise each day, even if just a brisk walk
-Aim to get eight hours of sleep per night and put down your books an hour before bedtime.
