Dangerous poison stolen from vet
November 13, 2013
-
Gardai have issued an urgent alert in relation to the theft of poisonous substances from a veterinary clinic in Celbridge, Kildare.
A burglary occurred at the clinic between 8.30pm on November 5 and 5pm on November 6 and a number of items were taken, including a bottle labeled as ‘Release', which contains a ‘very poisonous substance' - pentobarbital.
This is highly toxic and is not intended for human consumption. Previously in the US, it was used in the execution of criminals. It is used by vets to euthanise animals.
"The product was contained in a 100ml clear glass bottle with an orange and white label and the words ‘Release' written in block capitals across the label. It is believed that there was only 15ml of pentobarbital in the glass bottle when it was taken," the Gardai said.
Both the Gardai and the Irish Medicines Board have said they are ‘very anxious' that this product is recovered. Anyone who may have information as to the whereabouts of this poison is asked to contact Gardai in Leixlip on (01) 666 7800, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
"If anyone has consumed this product, they should seek immediate medical assistance. They are also advised to contact the Poisons Unit at Beaumont Hospital on (01) 837 9966," the Gardai added.
