  • Two new counselling rooms have been opened in Tralee in honour of inspirational Kerry teenager, Donal Walsh, who died of cancer two years ago.

In the months prior to his death, Donal spoke openly about how much he wanted to live and appealed to young people not to take their own lives. He died in May 2013 at the age of 16, having battled cancer for four years.

The counseling rooms are located in the national suicide and bereavement charity, Console's Tralee centre. Console worked closely with Donal's family on this project and the rooms were decorated by Donal's friends.

"We are honoured to collaborate with Console so that Donal's work continues. Through Console we are reaching out to young people of his own age who are in distress or whose lives have been touched by suicide," explained Donal's mother, Elma Walsh.

The rooms, one of which is for teenagers and young adults, and one for children aged between six and 10, have been funded by the Donal Walsh LiveLife Fund.

According to Console's CEO, Paul Kelly, Donal's message that life is worth living had such an impact ‘because he spoke from the heart'.

The rooms include some of Donal's favourite inspirational quotes.

"One of the quotes from Donal's den we have used is 'life is a beautiful struggle'. He believed if a teenager was in trouble, a door will open and today we are opening the door on Donal's Rooms where hope and help are always available for young people," said the Tralee centre manager, Amber Kavanagh.

The rooms are designed to help young people relax and interact with their counsellors. The children's room includes toys and a sandbox, while the teenagers' room contains an air hockey table.

Console offers counselling services and a 24-hour helpline to people in crisis and those bereaved by suicide. Full-time counselling services are located nationwide, as well as in London in the UK. To contact Console, call 1800 247 247 or click here for more information
