  • Optometrists have called on the HSE to introduce a free annual sight examination for all schoolchildren at their local optometrist.

The Association of Optometrists Ireland (AOI) said this would help eliminate eye test waiting lists, manage children who have straightforward visual problems and ensure that those with more serious problems are referred without delay to eyecare specialists.

Lynda McGivney Nolan of the AOI said Ireland is way behind the rest of Europe in the provision of regular eye tests for children.

"All that is offered is a basic school screening which if carried out at all is done at the age of five or six."

She said if a child has a suspected vision problem, he or she must join a waiting list of up to two years in some parts of Ireland to gain access to a free sight exam.

"Often, by the time a child is seen for an appointment, the problem is irreversible."

The call for free annual sight tests was made to coincide with Bright Eyes Week, which takes place until next Saturday, to promote eye health among school children.

During the week, participating optometrists will be offering children's tests free of charge while others will charge a nominal rate.

Optometrists will also be visiting schools to talk to parents, teachers and pupils about the importance of healthy eyesight.
