Abortion Bill goes to Seanad
July 15, 2013
-
The Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill, which was passed in the Dail last week, begins its passage through the Seanad today.
Debate on the controversial legislation is expected to take all week and may even enter a second week.
Last week, 127 TDs voted in favour of the Bill and 31 voted against it after marathon discussions. A woman will now have a right to an abortion if her life is at risk. This includes if her life is at risk from suicide.
If the Bill is approved by the Seanad, it will be sent to President Michael D Higgins, who will either sign it into law or refer it to the Supreme Court to have its constitutionality checked.
If he wishes to refer it to the Supreme Court, the President must first consult with the Council of State.
Meanwhile, if the Upper House of the Seanad chooses to make amendments to the Bill, the Dail will have to approve or reject them before the Bill can be sent forward to President Higgins to be signed into law.
