  • An 18-year-old man in Mexico has reportedly developed a ‘smart’ bra integrated with sensors that can detect early signs of breast cancer.

Julian Rios Cantu of Higia Technologies was recently named by the international Entrepreneurs‘ Organization (EO) as ‘Global Student Entrepreneur of the Year 2017’ for his creation of EVA, an intelligent bra that can help in the early detection of breast cancer. The engineering student prevailed in the global finals against more than 50 competitors from over 50 countries. He received prize money of US$20,000 as well as additional endowments from the EO network.

Higia Technologies is a Mexican biosensor company dedicated to ‘boosting women’s quality of life through professional self-exploratory methods that increase early detection of breast cancer’. Its flagship product, EVA, has 200 sensors that map the surface of the breast and use touch, texture, colour and pressure to non-invasively assess breast health. It has to be worn for only an hour a week, so it does not interfere with daily life. The data is then processed by artificial intelligence.  The bra is at the prototype stage.
