Two hundred and eighty-two organ transplants took place in 2023, the HSE Organ Donation Transplant Ireland Office (ODTI) has reported, with 95 deceased and 30 living organ donors.
Of the 282 transplants, 191 were kidney, 51 liver, 24 lung, seven heart and six pancreas.
Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly said, “Organ donation is one of the most selfless gifts that a person can give. This year 282 transplants were made possible through the altruism of donors and their families. As a result, other families across the country will have their loved ones here for another Christmas."
“I encourage everyone to talk to your loved ones about organ donation to make your intentions known. It important for them to know your wishes, to help them should they have to make a decision in a time of great sadness and loss.
“Having that conversation also ensures wherever possible the loss of one precious life can be turned to benefit many others through donation.”
