The implementation of mandatory mouthguard use in ladies Gaelic football in 2014 significantly reduced dental injuries and associated costs across the ensuing three years, an investigation by researchers at Dublin City University has found.

The research, conducted at the university's Centre for Injury Prevention and Performance, examined dental injury incidence and associated costs in ladies Gaelic football from 2011-2019.

The study found that dental claim costs fell by 51.7% in the three years following the mouthguard mandate. Adult costs fell 53.8%, while juvenile costs were reduced by 44%.

The study was published recently in the Irish Medical Journal.
